Question Four: Discuss the characteristics and functions of operating system, application, Internet, and assistive software.
There are many different types of operating systems and when purchasing a new computer one of the most important things to decide is what type of operating system you want based off of the three major operating types. Microsoft Windows, Mac Os X and Linux are the three basic types of operating systems. However, to detect the difference is whether your computer is a Mac or a PC. By determining whether you are dealing with a Mac or PC will enable you to determine the type of operating system. Application programs consist of word processing, database, spreadsheet, graphics and multimedia programs. Word processing is the most popular application and the most commonly used. The software that used the most, however, is the internet. The software that corresponds with internet use is the programs that allow for your email and for the use of a browser. There are different types of internet software as well such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. Most internet software is free and easy to install to your computer. Internet software also includes media players and plug-ins. lastly, assistive software is crucial for education in that it provides endless resources for instructional information and educational programs.
