Ch. 12 Building Community from Inside and Outside the Classroom

Chapter 12 talks mainly about building community. This topic was thoroughly covered in the Classroom Management class offered previously in the program; however, after looking into this chapter I was able to see a lot of information about building community by reaching out of the classroom that I had not been exposed to before. This section of the chapter intrigued me in that it is an area I had not previously given much thought. I was aware of the idea of sending home weekly news letters to keep parents and guardians updated but it had never occurred to me to ask the parents about their children. Duh! Right? According to the text, parents can be an invaluable resource for information about students. This makes sense because they know about their students.
Another idea I found within the chapter which I think will be helpful is providing parents with a guide to allow them to help their students with homework. This guide could be as simple as providing guiding questions that parents can ask their students when working on homework. I think this is a good idea because sometimes parents might either be intimidated by their students homework and not know how to help or parents may be too helpful and just give the students the answers rather than helping them understand the assignment.
