Technology: Characteristics of Special Learners
Often times when choosing a career as an educator people do not fully understand all that the job entails. I know I personally did not realize all that teachers were responsible for. For example, as a teacher in a public school you will be responsible for teaching students from all walks of life. Students will come to you differences in culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, and even with disabilities and it is the responsibility of the teacher to find ways to incorporate all students and to ensure that the material is learned. It is for this reason that incorporating technology into the school systems has been so important. By implementing technology into the schools all students are able to benefit especially those students with special needs. One such example of technology is an AT device. An AT is any technological device that makes life and learning easier for the disabled. These devices range from complex machines that must be implanted surgically to simple tools that can be purchased off the shelves in stores. The current market for AT devices is targeting schools and teachers because of the need of the school age students for these products. While these devices can be detrimental to disabled students it is important that the school system and teacher remains informed and properly trained on how to use these devices and on what to outcomes to expect so that the tools can be used appropriately.
