National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and CreativityTeachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.
4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.
5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) is a set guideline in which teachers should adhere to when teaching technology to students. The first guideline insists that teachers promote students learning and creativity with the use of technology. Teachers should demonstrate to their students the benefits of using a computer to advance learning. The second point the NETS-T provides is that students should have the opportunity to have learning experiences in which they can manipulate and evaluate equipment. In allowing students to learn technology from hands on approach students are able to learn in context. The third standard asks that teachers have a thorough knowledge of the technology they are teaching to ensure maximum learning for the students and to eliminate confusion. The fourth point talks about the importance of understanding local and global societal issues and the teacher’s ability to demonstrate ethical behavior in their professional practices. The NETS-S also suggests that it is the teacher’s responsibility to continuously improve in their practice. New knowledge is always being discovered especially in the technology community. Thus it is the teacher’s responsibility to model life-long learning and exhibiting the correct use of digital tools and resources to the students. Technology is a very important factor in education and it is important that these guidelines are followed so that every student has a strong knowledge of technology.
